Workshops

The following workshops will be held in conjunction with the Konvens 2008 (in each case one day)

Database Technologies for Linguistic Hypermedia Applications

This year's Conference on Natural Language Processing (Konferenz zur Verarbeitung natürlicher Sprache, KONVENS is hosted by the Society for Computational Linguistics & Language Technology (Gesellschaft für linguistische Datenverarbeitung, GLDV) in collaboration with the Center of Language of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences (Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften, BBAW). Additionally, the GLDV Working Group on Hypermedia is offering a one-day workshop dedicated to database technologies for linguistic hypermedia applications. The goal of this workshop is to create a forum for researchers interested in database-driven solutions in the context of natural language processing. We hope to stimulate and facilitate an active exchange on unique and interdisciplinary applications, ideas, approaches, and methods. Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

For a long time already, Database Management Systems (DBMS) and database-driven solutions have been core technology for the storing of natural language resources in Applied Linguistics and Computational Linguistics. In recent years, electronic text, audio and video corpora, online information systems, advanced dictionaries, and terminological and bibliographical resources created an expanding need for efficient organization of data. Popular fields of research like the "Semantic Web", combined with lexical-semantic classification strategies, demand flexible retrieval solutions for natural language content and meta data.

The workshop features English or German paper presentations (~40’) and extended demos. The focus should be on current research projects, case studies, and conceptual or technical desiderata. Full papers are limited to 12 pages, including figures and literature. All submissions will be peerreviewed. Accepted papers will appear in time in a special issue of "SDV - Sprache und Datenverarbeitung/International Journal for Language Data Processing".

Lexical-Semantic and Ontological Resources Maintenance, Representation, and Standards

The workshop is a follow-up to a series of thematically related events starting with two GLDV workshops on GermaNet in 2003 and 2005 and continued by meetings on lexical-semantic resources at the DGfS 2006 and GLDV 2007 conferences.

The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum for discussion of recent developments in the area of lexical-semantic resources - especially with regard to wordnets and ontologies. The focus of this year's meeting is on the maintenance, extension, representation, and standardization of resources. A topic of particular interest is interoperability between different types of resources. Contributions reporting on ongoing projects and initiatives to build new resources are also welcome. Papers on the application of lexical-semantic and ontological resources should be submitted to the main conference.
